Ahead of their next general meeting at the GDSC this Thursday, we caught up with long-time member Rita Johnson to learn what Probus is really about and why it’s fast becoming one of the most active community groups in town.
WHAT IS PROBUS?
Probus short for Professional and Business is a social club designed for retired or semi-retired people looking to stay socially connected, mentally stimulated, and involved in community life.

The organisation is deliberately non-political and non-fundraising, focusing instead on fun, friendship, and fellowship.
MONTHLY MEETINGS AT THE GDSC
The Grafton Probus Club meets on the third Thursday of every month, hosting a general meeting at the Grafton District Services Club.
Each meeting features a guest speaker, offering insights into local organisations, services, and community stories. This Thursday, members will be hearing from Michael Seier, CEO of the GDSC.
“Each month we have a guest speaker who talks for about 20 to 30 minutes about their organisation.”
The second Thursday of every month is reserved for the club’s committee meeting, where upcoming activities and schedules are planned.

“Honestly,” Rita laughs, “I think some of us are busier now than when we were working!”
These activities help members stay active, connected, and engaged whether they love gardening, playing cards, or simply enjoying a good chat over coffee.
HOW TO JOIN THE GRAFTON PROBUS CLUB
Joining is easy and welcoming exactly what the club prides itself on.
Simply come along to a general meeting on the third Thursday of the month at the GDSC. Visitors are greeted at the door, where members collect a small $4 contribution which covers morning tea and insurance.
“If a new person arrives and doesn’t know anyone, we make sure they’re introduced and looked after.”

Many members stay for a relaxed lunch at the club afterwards another chance to bond, chat and meet new friends.
