Grafton Probus Club

If you’ve ever wondered what life after retirement looks like in Grafton, the answer might surprise you because for members of the Grafton Probus Club, things are busier, brighter, and more social than ever.

Ahead of their next general meeting at the GDSC this Thursday, we caught up with long-time member Rita Johnson to learn what Probus is really about and why it’s fast becoming one of the most active community groups in town.

WHAT IS PROBUS?

Probus short for Professional and Business is a social club designed for retired or semi-retired people looking to stay socially connected, mentally stimulated, and involved in community life.

“There’s no age limit. Once you’re retired, you can join.”
Rita Johnson

The organisation is deliberately non-political and non-fundraising, focusing instead on fun, friendship, and fellowship.

MONTHLY MEETINGS AT THE GDSC

The Grafton Probus Club meets on the third Thursday of every month, hosting a general meeting at the Grafton District Services Club.

Each meeting features a guest speaker, offering insights into local organisations, services, and community stories. This Thursday, members will be hearing from Michael Seier, CEO of the GDSC.

“Each month we have a guest speaker who talks for about 20 to 30 minutes about their organisation.”

The second Thursday of every month is reserved for the club’s committee meeting, where upcoming activities and schedules are planned.

MORE THAN A MEETING: A MONTH FULL OF ACTIVITIES

If you think Probus is only about monthly gatherings, think again. The Grafton club has created a full social calendar that would put many workplaces to shame.

A TYPICAL MONTH AT GRAFTON PROBUS INCLUDES:

Green Tums Garden Club

Weekly Wednesday card group at the GDSC

“Chalk Talk Day” outings to the Saraton Theatre

Morning Tea Coffee Club

Saturday walking group

Monthly Happy Hour

Book afternoon

Friday games afternoon

New Life Writing Group (“Writing your life story”)

“Honestly,” Rita laughs, “I think some of us are busier now than when we were working!”

These activities help members stay active, connected, and engaged whether they love gardening, playing cards, or simply enjoying a good chat over coffee.

HOW TO JOIN THE GRAFTON PROBUS CLUB

Joining is easy and welcoming exactly what the club prides itself on.

Simply come along to a general meeting on the third Thursday of the month at the GDSC. Visitors are greeted at the door, where members collect a small $4 contribution which covers morning tea and insurance.

“If a new person arrives and doesn’t know anyone, we make sure they’re introduced and looked after.”

For those who prefer, you can also ring Rita directly to learn more or arrange your first visit.

Many members stay for a relaxed lunch at the club afterwards another chance to bond, chat and meet new friends.

A CLUB BUILT ON FRIENDSHIP

At its heart, the Grafton Probus Club is a place for retirees to stay connected, share experiences, and enjoy life in a supportive social setting.

With its welcoming spirit, wide range of activities, and commitment to community, Probus continues to be one of Grafton’s most vibrant groups for retired locals.

The next meeting is this Thursday, 10am at the GDSC, with guest speaker Michael Seier. All retirees are welcome.
